Get to light, people, and doors immediately. Do not worry about being polite.
Do this:
–Cross the street or change direction once to confirm. Don’t go home.
–Head into an open business: gas station, bar, restaurant, hotel lobby, store, hospital, fire station.
–Call someone out loud or call 911 if you feel unsafe.
Say clearly:
–“I’m being followed by a man on [street name]. I’m walking toward [landmark].”
–Make noise and draw attention if he keeps coming:
–“Stop following me!”
–“I don’t know this man!”
–“Call 911!”
And Do This:
–Keep your hands free. Keys can be in hand, but don’t dig through your purse.
–Do not let him get close. If he approaches, move toward traffic, lights, houses, or people.
–If you’re near a house, knock hard and yell, “Please call 911!”
–If you have a car nearby, don’t sit in it fumbling. Get in, lock doors, drive away immediately.
–Trust the bad feeling. You do not owe him an explanation, eye contact, or friendliness.
Best line to use loudly:
“Stop following me. I don’t know you. I’m calling the police.”
